Michael Sullivan is a director with the firm and is chair of the Public Companies Group. Mr. Sullivan has broad experience representing public and private companies and their underwriters and investors in a variety of transactions. He has a particular focus on the representation of startup and emerging growth companies in the information technology and clean tech sectors.
Mr. Sullivan has handled hundreds of venture capital financings and over fifty public offerings, including a $250 million common stock offering for Digital River, Inc. in 2006, PlanetOut Inc.’s initial public offering in October 2004, eBay Inc.’s $1.3 billion public offering in 1999, and an initial public offering for Netcom On-Line Communications, the first Internet public offering, in 1994. He has also handled numerous mergers and acquisition transactions, including Digital River, Inc.’s acquisition of element 5 and Google Inc.’s acquisition of Urchin Software Corporation.
His representative clients include Digital River, Inc., PlanetOut Inc., BPL Global, Ltd., H5 Technologies, IDG Ventures SF, WaldenVC, PBwiki, Inc., Levensohn Venture Partners, the Roda Group, Think Passenger, Inc., Pie Digital, Inc., Blueprint Ventures, Real Girls Media Network, Inc., Kiptronic, Inc. and Blumberg Capital.
Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Sullivan practiced at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP (formerly Pillsbury Madison & Sutro LLP) from 1984-1997 and at Cooley Godward LLP from 1997-2003.

Mr. Sullivan is a contributor to Venture Capital & Public Offering Negotiation (Aspen Law & Business). His work as a corporate attorney is highlighted in the 2007 Corporate and Finance version of The Legal 500 United States edition. He was also recognized as a Northern California Super Lawyer in 2004 and from 2006 through 2008 by Law & Politics.
